Affordable Winelands wedding venues: what you get under R60 000, R100 000 and R150 000
Where the lower-priced wine farm and country venues are, what each price band buys, and which Winelands venues publish a starting price at all.
Updated 2 November 2026
Most lists of affordable Winelands venues never say what affordable means. This one does. Below we set out three price bands in Rand, explain what venue hire covers at each level, and show the venues on this site that publish a starting price. Be aware that most Winelands estates quote on request, so a venue not appearing in the table is not necessarily expensive; it simply has not published a number.
The bands are for venue hire only, before food and drink. A 2025 South African cost survey put a typical Winelands estate at R90 000 to R130 000 for hire, a barn or farm hall at R40 000 to R60 000 and venue-only hire from about R20 000. The same survey grouped venues as affordable (R20 000 to R60 000), moderate (R60 000 to R90 000) and luxury (R90 000 to R150 000), and those are the bands we use here.
Winelands venues that publish a starting price
| Venue | Town | Guests | From | Catering | Stay on site | Wet-weather plan |

| Laurent at Lourensford | Somerset West | 80–200 | R40 000 | In-house | not listed | Yes |
| Ashanti Estate | Paarl | up to 300 | R50 000 | In-house | Yes | Yes |
| Mont Martre Chalets & Venue | Franschhoek | 80–140 | R70 000 | In-house | Yes | ask |
Prices are published starting prices and change by season; confirm with the venue.
Three venues on this site publish a figure. Laurent at Lourensford in Somerset West lists venue-hire packages from R40 000 to R79 000 depending on season and day, with catering through its preferred partners on top. Ashanti Estate in Paarl shows a venue-hire band of R50 000 to R64 999 on its Bridebook profile, with in-house catering from about R800 a head. Mont Martre in Franschhoek publishes wedding packages from R70 000, with in-house catering only. Treat all three as a guide, not a quote, and check the current package PDF before you compare.
What each band buys
Under R60 000: barns, farm halls and venue-only hire
At this level you are usually paying for the space, basic furniture and sometimes staff, and bringing in your own caterer. The lower end of the band, around R20 000, is venue-only hire where nothing else is included. Several Tulbagh and Wellington venues work this way: Waverley Hills has no in-house kitchen and expects you to bring a caterer, De Stilte charges no corkage and allows food trucks, and Rijk's lets you bring your own caterers and bar service. None of them publishes a price, so ask for the brochure and confirm what is included.

R60 000 to R100 000: mid-range estates with in-house catering
This is where most published Winelands prices sit. Expect a proper indoor reception room, a ceremony lawn or chapel, tables and chairs, a venue manager and in-house catering charged per head on top of the hire fee. Ashanti, Laurent and Mont Martre all land in or near this band. A published 2019/20 brochure from one well-known Stellenbosch estate listed its indoor hall at R46 000 and a ceremony fee of R7 000, with a 10 percent service fee and R80 corkage on top; those rates are now higher but they show how the pieces add up.
R100 000 to R150 000: full estates
Above R100 000 you are into the typical Winelands wine-estate band, often with a marquee or Bedouin tent on a lawn, a dedicated coordinator and the option of rooms on the estate. The same 2019/20 brochure listed a Bedouin tent at R69 000 and a marquee at R92 000 before catering. If your budget is here, read our luxury and exclusive-use venues page as well, because some exclusive-use estates cost less than you expect once accommodation is counted in.
Where the savings are
- Town: Paarl, Wellington and Tulbagh venues are generally cheaper than Stellenbosch and Franschhoek for the same type of setting, and the big-capacity venues in Wellington are among the best value per head.
- Day of the week: Fridays and Saturdays are priced highest. A Thursday or Sunday at the same venue can be noticeably cheaper.
- Season: venues discount May to August. One Stellenbosch estate's published winter special came to R60 000 for 50 guests. See our winter weddings page for venues with indoor spaces.
- Venue-only hire with an outside caterer, at a venue that allows it, lets you control the food budget. Buffet catering was surveyed at R350 to R700 a head in 2025 against R700 to R1 200 for plated.
- Guest numbers: a minimum guest count is common. Bakenhof in Wellington, for example, sets a 100-guest minimum on its all-inclusive package.

All-inclusive or venue-only: the maths at 80 guests
An all-inclusive package in the Winelands was surveyed at R1 000 to R2 500 or more a head in 2025. At 80 guests that is R80 000 to R200 000 for venue, food and usually house wine, with the furniture and coordinator built in. Bakenhof's published all-inclusive rates of R2 800 to R6 000 a head, which include accommodation, show the top of the range.
Venue-only hire at R40 000 plus buffet catering at R500 a head comes to R80 000 at 80 guests, before drinks, furniture hire or staff. It can beat the package, but only if the venue has a kitchen your caterer can use and you are prepared to hire what the venue does not supply. Ask for the inclusions list from both and compare the totals, not the headline fees.
Worked comparison for 80 guests (2025 survey ranges)
| Approach | Venue | Food | Total before drinks |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-inclusive at R1 000 pp | included | included | R80 000 |
| All-inclusive at R2 500 pp | included | included | R200 000 |
| Venue-only R40 000 + buffet R500 pp | R40 000 | R40 000 | R80 000 plus hire and staff |
| Venue-only R40 000 + plated R1 000 pp | R40 000 | R80 000 | R120 000 plus hire and staff |
Questions to ask before you sign
- Is there a service fee on top of the venue fee? One Stellenbosch brochure adds 10 percent.
- What is the corkage per bottle if we bring wine, and may we bring any at all? Surveyed corkage runs R30 to R80 a bottle.
- Is there a minimum spend or minimum guest number, and does it drop in winter or midweek?
- What time must music stop, and what does an extension cost?
- Does the price include set-up the day before, cleaning and generator back-up?
