Wellington wedding venues, Western Cape

Wellington is the quiet valley past Paarl, under the Hawequa and Bainskloof mountains, and it is where Winelands couples go when they want 150 to 200 guests, rooms on the farm and a bill that is lower than Stellenbosch. Every Wellington venue we list is compared below.

A note on the name first: this is Wellington in South Africa's Western Cape, 15 minutes north of Paarl and about 55 minutes from Cape Town International Airport, not the New Zealand capital. The town is a working farming centre with a short main street, and its venues are spread along the R45 towards Malmesbury, the R301 and the road up to Bainskloof Pass.

Wellington's venues are built for size. Three of the five we list take 200 guests, and most of them have accommodation on the property, which is rarer in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. The one venue with a published price, Bakenhof, sells all-inclusive packages; its Bridebook profile has shown R2 800 to R6 000 per person with a 100-guest minimum and in-house catering at R580 to R800 a head. Those figures come from the directory rather than Bakenhof's own site, so treat them as a guide and ask for the current 2026 or 2027 package PDF, which the farm does publish.

Wine estates lead here as everywhere in the Winelands, but they take different forms. Bakenhof is the modern one: a glass-walled reception venue and a white glass chapel set among the vines, with eight self-catering suites a short walk away. Kleinevalleij is the opposite, a restored Victorian manor above the Bovlei valley at the foot of Bainskloof Pass, with the Festa restaurant kitchen behind it and guest cottages on the estate. Diemersfontein on the R301 is a garden venue with a banquet hall, a licensed bar and a guesthouse, and Au d'Hex pairs a glass-walled indoor venue with a ceremony deck facing the Du Toitskloof mountains.

The exception to the wine-estate pattern is Die Kalkoonde, a restored 200-year-old limestone works on Burgersdrift Farm with an open-air amphitheatre over a dam and an indoor hall as the rain plan. It is exclusive-use, lets you bring an outside caterer and offers both venue-only and near-all-inclusive packages, which makes it the most flexible venue in town for couples who want to control the budget line by line.

Venues by guest count

For 150 to 200 guests, Kleinevalleij seats 80 to 200 in the manor, Diemersfontein takes 200 in the gardens, and Bakenhof's all-inclusive packages start at 100 guests. For 80 to 120, Au d'Hex's indoor venue holds 120 with a dance floor, Die Kalkoonde's hall and amphitheatre each take 120, and Diemersfontein's banquet hall is sized for 80 to 100. Wellington is not the town for very small weddings; the minimums at Bakenhof and the sizes of the halls mean couples with under 50 guests usually look at Paarl, Tulbagh or an elopement package elsewhere.

What it costs compared with Stellenbosch

The honest answer is that only Bakenhof publishes a figure, and it is per person rather than a hire fee. At the quoted R2 800 to R6 000 a head for 100 guests, the all-inclusive total runs from R280 000 to R600 000, which includes venue, catering and the chapel rather than hire alone. Set that against Bridebook's 2025 benchmarks for Winelands estate hire of R90 000 to R130 000 before any catering, and the Wellington package sits at or below what a Stellenbosch estate costs once food is added. Kleinevalleij is tagged mid to expensive on Pink Book; the others quote on request.

  • Au d'Hex includes tables, cutlery and crockery in its all-inclusive approach, which removes a hire line many couples forget.
  • Diemersfontein's bar is licensed with house wines included, so ask what corkage applies if you want to bring anything else.
  • Die Kalkoonde's venue-only option suits couples with a caterer already in mind; ask what kitchen facilities the caterer will have.
  • Bakenhof's suites sleep 22 adults and four children; ask whether they must be booked with the wedding or can be released to guests.

Getting here and where guests stay

Wellington is about 55 minutes from the airport and under an hour from Cape Town via the N1 and Paarl. Paarl itself is 15 minutes away, and that is where many guests end up staying because it has more hotels. In Wellington, Lady Loch Guest House on the Berg River sleeps around 23 across eight rooms, with rates from about R1 960 a room on SA-Venues, which makes it a sensible block for the wedding party. The estates with their own rooms (Bakenhof, Kleinevalleij, Au d'Hex and Diemersfontein) take the couple and immediate family.

Because the town has few late-night taxis, book a shuttle for the return to Paarl. Our guest travel guide explains the options and costs.

Season

Wellington is inland and warmer than the coastal towns in summer, so January and February ceremonies are best after four in the afternoon. The dry season from October to April is peak, winter brings green vineyards and rain, and peak Saturdays go 12 to 18 months ahead. Indoor halls at Au d'Hex, Kleinevalleij, Diemersfontein and Die Kalkoonde mean a winter wedding here loses nothing.

Questions couples ask

How far is Wellington from Cape Town?

About 55 minutes from Cape Town International Airport and under an hour from the city on the N1 through Paarl. Paarl is 15 minutes south on the R301, and Tulbagh lies further north through the mountains.

Which Wellington venues host 200 guests?

Kleinevalleij seats 80 to 200 in its restored Victorian manor and Diemersfontein takes 200 in its gardens. Bakenhof's all-inclusive packages start at 100 guests and are sold per head. For 250 or more, look at the larger Paarl and Somerset West venues.

Are Wellington venues cheaper than Stellenbosch?

Usually, though only Bakenhof publishes a price. Its Bridebook profile showed R2 800 to R6 000 per person all-inclusive, which at 100 guests is R280 000 to R600 000 for venue, catering and chapel together. A Stellenbosch estate often charges R90 000 to R130 000 for hire alone (Bridebook 2025) before food, so the Wellington package is competitive once everything is added up.

Which Wellington venues have accommodation on site?

Bakenhof has eight self-catering suites sleeping 22 adults, Au d'Hex has a guesthouse for up to 20, Kleinevalleij has guest cottages and Diemersfontein has a guesthouse on the estate. Lady Loch Guest House in town sleeps around 23 for the overflow.

Can we use our own caterer in Wellington?

At Die Kalkoonde, yes; it offers venue-only hire with outside catering. Bakenhof, Kleinevalleij and Diemersfontein cater in-house, and Au d'Hex works on an all-inclusive basis with a venue manager. Ask each venue about dietary menus and minimum numbers before you compare per-head prices.

What is the best month for an outdoor wedding in Wellington?

October, November, March and April give warm, dry days without the midsummer heat. December to February is hot inland, so plan a late-afternoon ceremony. May to August is wet but every venue here has an indoor hall, and off-peak dates are easier to book.

Do Wellington wine estates require you to serve their wine?

Most Winelands estates do. Diemersfontein includes house wines in its licensed bar. Die Kalkoonde is not a wine estate and lets you bring your own suppliers. Ask every venue what corkage applies to anything brought in; R30 to R80 a bottle is the regional norm.
