Winter wedding venues in the Winelands: specials, fireplaces and realistic weather

What a May to August wedding in the Winelands is really like, which venues have fireplaces, cellars and indoor chapels, and where the winter discounts are.

Updated 2 November 2026

Winter in the Winelands runs from May to August. It is the wet season, the vineyards turn from gold to bare to bright green, daytime highs sit around 17 to 18 degrees, and venues discount openly because their calendars are empty. For a smaller wedding with an indoor reception and a fireplace, it is the best-value time of year. This page lists the venues on this site with proper indoor spaces and heating, and is honest about the one venue that publishes a winter discount.

What winter saves

Venues discount May to August but rarely publish the figure. On this site, Winery Road Forest near Somerset West states that midweek and winter rates are discounted, and Laurent at Lourensford publishes a venue-hire range of R40 000 to R79 000 that moves with season and day, so the low end is a winter or weekday figure. Elsewhere in the research, one Stellenbosch estate's published winter special came to R60 000 for 50 guests. Waverley Hills in Tulbagh publishes off-peak and peak rates in its brochure without showing them on the page.

Suppliers are quieter too. Photographers, planners and florists are easier to book at 9 to 12 months' notice for a winter date, against 12 to 18 months for a peak-season Saturday, and some will negotiate. The saving on the venue is the one to chase first, because it is the largest line.

Cellars and indoor chapels

A barrel cellar is the Winelands' answer to a winter ceremony. Haute Cabrière's Pinot Noir cellar, cut into the Franschhoek mountainside, has high arched ceilings; Nooitgedacht's original cellar seats 120 to 300; Laborie's renovated Champagne Cellar takes 120 behind large windows; Rickety Bridge's banqueting hall was once its barrel cellar. Diamant's chapel is a 1700s wine cellar with pews for 120. For an indoor chapel, Winery Road Forest's white chapel is described as all-weather, Manley has a small consecrated chapel with an indoor pre-drinks area the estate recommends for winter, and Montpellier's Dome Cathedral and Glass House give a Tulbagh wedding two covered options.

What the weather is really like

Winter rain in the Western Cape comes in fronts: two or three wet days, then clear, cold, still days. June and July are usually the wettest. Plan for the ceremony indoors or under cover and treat a dry afternoon as a gift, not a plan. Daylight is short, so an early-afternoon ceremony leaves time for photographs before the light goes; the soft, low light is one reason photographers like winter work. Ask the venue about back-up power, because winter storms and the grid do not mix: Eikenhof, Holden Manz, Vrede en Lust, Grande Roche and Waverley Hills all list generators or back-up power.

TipTell guests to bring a proper coat for the drinks hour and to drive carefully: winter rain on farm roads is the main logistical risk. If guests are staying off site, a shuttle removes the problem. See our guest travel and shuttle guide.

Who winter suits

Winter works best for 40 to 120 guests in a venue that is indoors by design, where the garden is for photographs rather than the reception. It suits couples who want the lower prices and shorter lead times, and overseas couples who cannot travel in the European summer. It suits a 250-guest marquee wedding badly: tents are cold, lawns are soft, and the saving is eaten by heating and flooring.

Questions couples ask

How much cheaper is a winter wedding in the Winelands?

Venues discount May to August but seldom publish by how much. Laurent at Lourensford's published range of R40 000 to R79 000 spans season and day, and one Stellenbosch estate's winter special came to R60 000 for 50 guests. Ask each venue for its off-peak rate card; Waverley Hills, for example, publishes peak and off-peak rates in its brochure.

Which months are wettest?

June and July are usually the heart of the wet season, with May and August at either end. Rain arrives in fronts of a few days with clear, cold spells between, so an indoor or covered plan is essential and a dry afternoon is a bonus.

Which Winelands venues have indoor ceremony spaces?

Winery Road Forest's chapel is described as all-weather, Manley has a consecrated chapel with an indoor pre-drinks area, Diamant's chapel is a 1700s cellar for 120, and Montpellier offers a Dome Cathedral and Glass House. Haute Cabrière's barrel cellar and Grande Roche's climate-controlled venue also take ceremonies indoors.

Do suppliers discount in winter?

Some do, and all are easier to book. Expect to secure photographers and planners at 9 to 12 months' notice for a winter date against 12 to 18 months for a peak Saturday. Ask directly; supplier discounts are not published.

Is winter a good time for overseas guests?

It is the European and North American summer, so flights and leave are easy, and guests can add Cape Town or a safari where winter is the dry, better game-viewing season. They should pack for cool, wet weather in the Winelands itself.

Do we need a venue with back-up power in winter?

It is worth asking. Winter storms and power cuts both happen, and an indoor evening reception depends on lighting, heating and the kitchen. Eikenhof, Holden Manz, Vrede en Lust, Grande Roche and Waverley Hills all list generators or back-up power in their published details.
