Guide
Best time of year to get married in the Winelands: month by month
Updated 2 November 2026
Weather, light, prices and availability for every month, the dates that cost more, how far ahead to book and which months suit guests flying from Europe.
The best months for an outdoor wedding in the Cape Winelands are February, March and April: the summer rain risk is at its lowest, the strong south-easterly wind of midsummer has usually eased, the vineyards are heavy with fruit or turning colour, and sunset still falls at a usable hour. December and January are just as dry but busier, windier and more expensive. October and November are good value with green vines and long evenings, at the cost of a small rain risk. Winter, from May to August, is wet and cool, and it is when estates discount.
The Winelands has a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, with most rain falling between May and August. Summer afternoon highs are typically in the high twenties, winter highs in the mid to high teens, and winter nights can drop to single figures. South Africa has no daylight saving, so sunset moves from around 20:00 in midsummer to around 17:45 in June.
Month by month
The Winelands wedding year
| Month | Weather | Sunset (approx.) | Prices | Availability and notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | Hot and dry, afternoon south-easter can be strong | About 20:00 | Peak | Book 12 to 18 months ahead; early January is holiday season with busy roads and high flight fares |
| February | Hot and dry; harvest under way | About 19:45 | Peak; Valentine's Day priced higher | Harvest means early-morning activity on working estates; superb light |
| March | Warm, dry, wind easing; harvest finishing | About 19:00 | Peak | Among the most settled months; book 12 to 18 months ahead for Saturdays |
| April | Warm days, cooler evenings, autumn colour in the vines | About 18:15 | Peak to shoulder | Easter weekend is busy; Bridebook rates March and April among the best outdoor months |
| May | Mild, first winter rain arrives; vines gold then bare | About 17:50 | Shoulder to winter rates | Winter specials start; weekday dates easy to get |

| July | Cool and wet, highs in the mid to high teens | About 18:00 | Winter rates | Lowest prices; UK and European school holidays make it the easiest month for overseas guests |

| September | Mild, drying out, vineyards budding | About 18:45 | Shoulder | Spring weddings with fresh green vines; some rain days |
| October | Warm, mostly dry, long evenings | About 19:10 | Shoulder to peak | Good value for an outdoor wedding; Paarl venues report strong demand from here on |
| November | Warm and dry, wind picking up | About 19:40 | Peak | Start of the main season; book early |
| December | Hot and dry, strongest south-easter | About 19:55 | Peak; New Year's Eve priced higher | Busiest weeks of the year in the Cape; guest flights and rooms must be booked far ahead |
TipTemperatures and sunset times are typical values for the Stellenbosch and Paarl valleys. Franschhoek and Tulbagh are enclosed by mountains and lose the sun earlier in the evening, so ask your venue what time the ceremony lawn goes into shade in your month.
Peak, shoulder and winter
Competitor FAQs and venue brochures agree on the shape of the season: peak summer weekends run from November to April and are booked 12 to 18 months ahead; weekday and winter dates need 9 to 12 months. Bridebook's Paarl FAQ puts the most popular period at December to May with September to November also busy. Venues openly discount from May to August, and one published Stellenbosch winter special was R60 000 for 50 guests (Pink Book), though most estates quote winter packages only on request. Our winter wedding venues page gathers the ones that publish numbers.

Dates that cost more
- Fridays and Saturdays carry the highest venue fees; Sundays and weekdays are cheaper at almost every estate (Bridebook 2025).
- Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve are priced higher by venues and suppliers alike.
- Long weekends and Easter fill guest accommodation in Franschhoek and Stellenbosch quickly.
- The Christmas and New Year fortnight is the most expensive time for guest flights and rooms, whatever the venue charges.
Wind, rain and the backup plan
Summer rain is rare but not impossible, so every outdoor venue should have an indoor alternative; the Winelands venues on this site are tagged with a wet-weather option where they have one. The bigger summer risk is wind. The south-easter blows hardest from November to January and can make an exposed lawn or a marquee unpleasant in the afternoon, which is one reason venues in enclosed valleys such as Franschhoek and Tulbagh, or ceremony spots sheltered by trees and buildings, are popular in midsummer. In winter, plan on an indoor ceremony and treat a dry afternoon as a bonus.

Light and the ceremony time
Photographers want the hour before sunset for portraits. In December and January that means a ceremony at about 16:30 to 17:00 so the couple can leave the reception briefly at 19:00. In April the same plan needs a ceremony at 15:00 and portraits before 18:00. In June the ceremony has to be early afternoon and the light is soft rather than golden, which many photographers prefer. Harvest from February to March brings tractors and crates to working estates in the mornings, which rarely affects an afternoon wedding but is worth knowing if you are staying on the farm.
Fitting overseas guests
For guests flying from Europe, the trade-off is between weather and fares. December to February gives the best weather and the worst flight prices. March and April, after the European school term resumes, bring cheaper fares and settled weather. July and August fall in the UK and European summer holidays, which makes attendance easiest but puts the wedding in the Cape winter. October and November are the compromise many destination couples pick: warm, dry, long evenings and fares not yet at Christmas levels. Our destination wedding guide covers the rest of the planning.

How far ahead to book
- Peak-season Saturday at a popular estate: 12 to 18 months.
- Weekday or winter date: 9 to 12 months, often less.
- Photographers, planners and bands for a peak Saturday: 9 to 12 months, as soon as the venue is confirmed.
- Guest accommodation in Franschhoek over a long weekend: as soon as you have the date.
If your date is flexible, ask venues for their rate card by month and day of the week before you commit. Many publish three tiers, and the difference between a Saturday in March and a Friday in May can be the whole cost of the photographer. Our Winelands wedding cost guide shows where the savings land.
